Highway 48 Rock Slide Cleared – Road Now Open to Traffic Again

Highway 48 Rockslide

The rock slide that completely closed Highway 48 in Chattooga County shortly after midnight – has now been cleared and the roadway is once again, now open to traffic.

Sheriff Mark Schrader said that the Georgia Department of Transportation and Chattooga County Public Works employees immediately went to work removing huge rocks, sticks and mud which had shut down the section of Highway 48 towards Cloudland – finally clearing the road just prior to 6:00am (Wednesday).

Those traveling along that stretch of road should still exercise caution as the possibility exists for more rocks to come down the mountainside.

An engineer has been called in to assess the situation, and determine where blockades may need to be constructed.
