GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) – Gadsden police confirm that a man who escaped from municipal court Thursday is in custody following a vehicle pursuit.
Capt. Paul Cody says that David DeWayne Jones was at the municipal court Thursday when he was able to
escape, in handcuffs, during a bathroom break. A witness told police they say Jones leaving court with a sweater over his handcuffs.
Cody says a Chevy Malibu was stolen in the area Jones was last seen Thursday.
Friday afternoon around 12:21 p.m., two officers spotted Jones and tried to arrest him at North 12th Street and Gardner Avenue. Jones fled in the same Chevy Malibu across Meighan Boulevard. At some point during the pursuit, Cody says that one of the officers fired shots.
Officers tried to hem Jones in on North 12th Street but he rammed a U.S. Marshal’s vehicle and was able to escape through a McDonald’s parking lot. The vehicle was stopped near the restaurant due to two flat tires.
Jones was originally booked on a bond of $3,500. He is now being held without bond. He is charged by the Gadsden Police with public intoxication, attempting to elude, drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. The Etowah Co. Sheriff’s Office has charged him with detention for probation violation and third degree escape.
