Centre City Council Receives Plaque of Appreciation

Centre City CouncilDuring Tuesday night’s meeting of the Centre City Council, Nancy Steed of the CED Mental Health Center was on hand to present Mayor Tony Wilkie and the Centre City Council with a plaque of appreciation for the services they provide to SoCool Summer School. According to Steed, each year, over 200 children register for the 5 week program, which is greatly enhanced by the city pool, tennis, and other amenities provided by the city.

Kay Davis from the Cherokee County Resource Center discussed plans for the yearly 5K and 10K Run to coincide with annual Centre Fall Festival next month. Davis thanked the council for all that they do to make the event a success, which saw 117 runners register last year. She stressed the importance of the run, adding that it’s the main fundraiser for the resource center, which operates solely on donations.

After a public hearing, the council voted to adopt a new zoning map, which has been in the works for some time.

Also approved, was the purchase of a dirt compactor for the city’s street department. The compactor will cost the city $999.99, which falls just under the $1,000 amount previously approved in the 2012-2013 budget.

Mayor Wilkie gave an update on the tennis court renovations, stating that the fencing is now up, with the first layer of acrylic having been laid earlier today.

There will be a budget hearing, tomorrow, September 11th, at 3:15 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. The next regular meeting of the Centre City Council is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th, at 5:00 pm.
