The Floyd County Police Department is investigating yet another phone scam.
Investigators say this scam involves a telephone call from someone posing as a bill collector, and they threaten the victim with arrest. A few minutes later someone posing as a member of the law enforcement community calls, also threatening arrest if a “payment” isn’t made.
The phone number is “cloaked” as a Floyd County Government number – which, of course leads the victim to believe the call is legit – even though it’s not.
The victim is instructed to go to a Wal-Mart or similar store – and purchase a “Green Dot” credit card in a specified amount for use in making the “payment”.
Be aware the Floyd County Police Department is NOT involved in bill collection; this is just one more way that scammers are trying to steal money through intimidation and threats.
No reputable collection agency will ask for you to make a payment through a “Green Dot” credit card – furthermore, threatening you in any way is forbidden by federal regulations.
Remember, YOU actually control the situation because you have the ability to hang up the phone at any time.
