SPRING GARDEN– Terry “Butch” Jacobs spent decades strengthening Cherokee County’s volunteer fire service. Now, fellow emergency responders are remembering the leadership and friendships he leaves behind.
Jacobs died Nov. 2 at age 71. He served 23 years as Spring Garden Volunteer Fire Department chief. He also served 25 years as the county fire association’s president.
The Cherokee County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments honored his service in a Nov. 4 statement. It also extended condolences to his family.
According to the association, Jacobs answered thousands of emergency calls. He also supported fellow firefighters and strengthened emergency services throughout the county.
His work also helped establish programs and systems that continue to serve residents.
During his leadership, the association established its Honor Guard in 2008. Volunteer departments also became part of the county’s emergency medical response system. In addition, the association developed an interoperable radio communications system.
A Leader Who Brought People Together
Chief Rich Lindsey of McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department remembered Jacobs as a humble leader. He supported ideas that benefited firefighters and residents, Lindsey said.
“It never had to be his idea, and he never cared who received the credit,” Lindsey said.
Lindsey also credited Jacobs with bringing people together around a shared purpose. He described him as both a leader and a longtime friend.
Meanwhile, Cherokee County Emergency Management Director Shawn Rogers reflected on working alongside Jacobs throughout his public safety career.
Rogers said the county’s 13 volunteer fire departments operate independently within their districts. However, he said they work together as one team and family. He credited Jacobs with spending decades building those relationships.
Rogers said Jacobs’ legacy rests in the relationships and unity he built, rather than his titles or years of service.
Chief David Glenn of Broomtown Volunteer Fire Department, the association’s current president, also praised Jacobs’ dedication to others.
“A title made him Chief, but his dedication made him a hero,” Glenn said.
Funeral Services Set for Thursday
Funeral services will take place at noon Thursday, Nov. 5, at Thompson Funeral Home in Piedmont. The family will also receive friends beginning at 10 a.m., and burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery.
Members of the Cherokee County Fire Association Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Jacobs was also a founding member of the unit.
The association extended its condolences to his wife, Glenda, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and everyone who knew and loved him.
