GADSDEN– Etowah County EMA reports a chemical fire in the Alabama City area and is urging people to avoid Meighan Boulevard near the incident.
In its initial notice, the agency said both northbound and southbound lanes would remain closed for approximately one hour. Drivers should use an alternate route instead of traveling through the affected area.
EMA Outlines Safety Precautions
The agency also urges residents to follow official instructions as the situation develops. If authorities issue an evacuation or shelter-in-place order, follow it immediately.
Anyone who smells chemical fumes or sees smoke should move away from the affected area. Additionally, residents should avoid approaching the fire or touching unknown liquids or debris.
If fumes may be entering a building, close windows and doors. Also, turn off systems that draw outdoor air inside, if it is safe to do so. Continue monitoring local emergency alerts for instructions.
People experiencing difficulty breathing, dizziness, or eye irritation should move away from the suspected exposure and seek urgent medical help. For severe symptoms, call 911 immediately.
EMA’s initial notice does not identify the chemical involved or provide an exact incident address. It also does not specify a reopening time beyond the initial one-hour estimate.
