CEDAR BLUFF– The Cedar Bluff Police Department is helping nursing students connect patient care with emergency response and community safety.

Police Chief Jeremy Stepps recently visited students in Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s practical nursing program. His presentation offered a look at police work and its connections to the situations future nurses may encounter.

The visit gave students an opportunity to learn from a community partner beyond their regular classroom lessons. It also highlighted how police work relates to patients involved in crashes, substance use, or law enforcement encounters.

Connecting Police Work With Patient Care

Stepps discussed the Drug Task Force, motor vehicle accident response, criminal investigations, and general emergency response procedures. He also covered PIT maneuvers, body camera footage, and the legal processes that follow officers into the courtroom.

In addition, he explained how officers identify different types of illegal substances in the field. The discussion also addressed department operating costs and the ongoing training officers complete to prepare for duty.

For future nurses, those topics offered a perspective on events that may precede a patient’s medical care.

Training, Endurance, and a New K-9

Stepps also described the physical demands of officer training and the importance of working under pressure and fatigue.

According to the supplied account, he described officers running several miles, dragging a body, and climbing a wall. They then draw their weapon and fire three accurate shots.

The account said students gained a new appreciation for the discipline and endurance that law enforcement requires.

Stepps also shared news of a new K-9 officer training with handler Sgt. Jamie Chatman. Students are looking forward to another visit with Stepps and the department’s new four-legged member, according to the account.

GNTC’s LPN nursing program thanked Stepps and the Cedar Bluff Police Department for their continued partnership in preparing future nurses. Through that partnership, Cedar Bluff is contributing public safety experience to the students’ education. It also encourages a broader understanding of community service.
