CENTRE– The Children’s Advocacy Center of Cherokee County is introducing a “Behind Our Doors” series to explain how its spaces support children and families.
Over the next several weeks, the center plans to share a closer look at the rooms where its work takes place. The series also explains why advocacy centers often resemble homes rather than traditional offices.
According to the center’s announcement, unfamiliar office buildings can feel intimidating to children who have experienced abuse or witnessed trauma. Instead, the center aims to create a welcoming environment where children feel safe and understand they are not in trouble.
The local nonprofit serves Cherokee County, providing hope and healing through intervention, advocacy, and education. It began in 1999 out of concern for abused children navigating the legal system.
At the center, children may participate in forensic interviews, receive counseling, or meet with a family advocate. In addition, staff help supportive caregivers find resources and understand the investigative and legal process.
The center also provides referrals to medical providers and community resources, along with coordination among professionals involved in a child’s case. Its services come at no cost to children and their supportive family members.
Meanwhile, its prevention education helps students recognize and respond to abuse, bullying, and digital dangers. Those lessons also encourage children to identify safe adults they can turn to for help.
Through the upcoming series, the center hopes to help residents understand the support available behind its front door. The emphasis remains on giving children a voice and helping families find a path toward healing.
The Children’s Advocacy Center is located at 411 North River Street in Centre. For information about its services, call 256-927-2111.
