CENTRE– A section of Cherokee county 22 between Alabama Belle and the Cowan Creek Bridge was closed this morning. The closure was because crews were fighting an RV fire and widespread grass fires.
Cause of fire is still under investigation.

The Centre Fire Department and Spring Creek Fire Department responded, with Cherokee County EMA on scene. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with traffic control.

Camper and Vehicle Fire Safety

Before moving a camper that has been parked for a while, inspect it carefully. The National Park Service recommends checking tires, brakes, electrical connections, hoses, and signs of fluid leaks before travel. It also advises keeping a hot exhaust pipe away from dry grass when parking.

The U.S. Fire Administration also recommends checking propane lines for damage and having a trained technician inspect an RV at least once a year. In addition, keep a portable fire extinguisher in a clearly marked, easy-to-reach location. Make sure everyone traveling knows where it is and that adults know how to use it.

If a fire starts, get everyone out and call 911. Only try an extinguisher on a small fire when you can do so safely. Never go back into a burning camper.
