HIGDON – Alec Ashley accounted for 242 total yards and two touchdowns in leading the Sand Rock Wildcats past North Sand Mountain 34-27 in Class 2A, Region 8 football action on Friday.
Ashley ran for 132 yards on seven carries and scored on a 40-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also completed 4-of-9 pass attempts for 110 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown pass to Bailey Martin. On defense, Ashley made 10 tackles, with four going for loss for the Wildcats (3-3, 2-2).
Nick Clanton gained 35 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns – a 19-yard run in the second quarter to tie the game at 14, and a 6-yard run in the third for Sand Rock’s final score.
Jack Dutton delivered 11 tackles with two for loss and a sack for the Wildcat defense. Landon Chadwick had an interception and scored Sand Rock’s first touchdown on a 90-yard kickoff return in the first quarter to tie the game at 7.
Aiden Haggard completed 12-of-26 pass attempts for 114 yards and three scores for the Bison (2-5, 1-2). Hunter Curtis carried the ball 33 times for 170 yards.
North Sand Mountain held a 21-20 edge at halftime behind a pair of Haggard touchdown passes to Hayden Hall in the second quarter.
Ashley gave Sand Rock a 27-21 lead in the third quarter on his 40-yard touchdown run. Clanton extended the Wildcat advantage to 34-21 on a 6-yard run later in the third.
Haggard had a 15-yard pass to Cody Whitley in the fourth quarter to bring the Bison within a touchdown, but Sand Rock held on down the stretch to earn the win.
Sand Rock hosts top-ranked Fyffe on Friday.
