Warriors fall to fourth-ranked Scottsboro 27-9

CENTRE – In a battle of undefeated teams in Class 4A, Region 8 play, the fourth-ranked Scottsboro Wildcats jumped out to a 19-point lead in the first half and defeated the Cherokee County Warriors 27-9 on Friday night.

Tatum Perry led the Warriors (3-3, 3-1) by completing 15-fo-26 pass attempts for 152 yards. He added 23 yards on 17 carries. Jayshawn Stroup was Perry’s top receiver with six catches for 54 yards. He also had 35 yards on 12 carries. Isaiah Young caught a pair of passes for 51 yards.

Zay Simpson put Scottsboro (6-0, 4-0) ahead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. Finn Sims connected on the extra point for a 7-0 Wildcat lead. Simpson then returned an interception 23 yards for a score to put Scottsboro up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 19-0 in the second on Colton Harding’s 12-yard touchdown toss to Conner Vaden.

The Warriors finally got on the scoreboard on Hugh Miller’s 32-yard field goal to make it a 19-3 game at halftime.

Cherokee County crept closer on Keshawn Thomas’s 60-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter to pull the Warriors within 10 at 19-9, but Scottsboro put the game away in the fourth with two touchdowns. The first came on Jake Turner’s 92-yard run. Harding’s 97-yard scoring connection with Vaden provided the final.

Cherokee County travels to Sardis on Friday.
