CENTRE– The Cherokee County leaf printing workshop will offer a hands-on way to welcome fall at the Cherokee County Historical Museum.

The museum will host its September Crafts & Things event at noon Friday, Sept. 25. The workshop will take place at 101 East Main Street in downtown Centre.

Everyone is welcome, and the participation fee is $20. According to the museum’s project guide, guests need only bring themselves for an afternoon of crafting, snacks, and fellowship.

Real Leaves Become Fall Designs

During the workshop, participants will use real leaves and paint to decorate old-fashioned tea towels. They can coat the back of each leaf with different shades before placing it on the fabric.

Next, participants can press the design with a brayer. A small bottle, can, or rolling pin can also help transfer the leaf’s shape and texture.

After the leaf is carefully removed, the print remains on the towel. Participants may then paint a small stem to complete the design.

In addition, the guide suggests using apple halves or orange slices to create other seasonal patterns. The finished towels can serve as fall decorations or useful handmade pieces for the home.

Project Connects Crafting and Household History

The museum’s workshop also recalls a time when families reused cloth fertilizer sacks for everyday household needs. Those sacks could become sheets, towels, dishcloths, and other practical items.

However, their appearance was left to the maker’s creativity. Painting, stenciling, and embroidery offered several ways to turn plain fabric into something personal.

By combining that practical tradition with colorful fall leaves, Crafts & Things gives participants a chance to make something useful while sharing time together.
