POLK COUNTY, Ga. – A Polk County jury has convicted a Rockmart man on three charges involving a child. The verdict followed a four-day trial in Polk County Superior Court.
Jurors found Robert Hershell Williams, 56, guilty of child molestation and sexual battery against a child under 16. They also convicted him of enticing a child for indecent purposes.
The case went to the jury Thursday, Aug. 20, after attorneys completed closing arguments. Jurors deliberated for less than 10 minutes before returning guilty verdicts on every charge.
Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Alison Karch prosecuted the case. She called several witnesses during the trial, including people who identified themselves as previous victims of Williams.
The District Attorney’s Office said those witnesses described past experiences while in Williams’ care. Karch worked with them as they prepared to testify about those experiences.
Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jaeson Smith praised the witnesses for coming forward. He also thanked jurors for their attention to the evidence and service to the community.
Following the verdict, Williams entered the custody of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 6.
