CENTRE – The Cherokee County Animal Shelter has temporarily stopped accepting non-emergency animal intakes because the facility is over capacity.
The closure will remain in effect until further notice. Emergency Animal Control impounds will continue as usual to address public safety and animal welfare concerns.
Shelter officials are encouraging residents to adopt animals and help create needed kennel space. Each adoption opens space for another dog or cat requiring shelter and care.
Anyone interested in adopting may contact the shelter at 256-266-1390 to learn about available animals.
Owners whose pets have been impounded are asked to reclaim them as soon as possible. The shelter said Alabama law provides a seven-day period for owners to redeem certain impounded dogs, cats, and ferrets after receiving notice.
The shelter also addressed animals impounded following an owner’s incarceration. Under shelter policy, the owner receives a Notice of Impoundment at the time of incarceration and has 10 days to arrange for the animal’s release.
The animal may be reclaimed by the owner or someone acting on the owner’s behalf. Family members and friends who can assist should contact the shelter promptly.
Shelter officials apologized for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure. They said operating beyond the facility’s intended capacity makes it increasingly difficult to provide safe housing, proper sanitation, daily enrichment, and quality care.
Residents can assist by adopting, fostering, promptly reclaiming lost pets, and sharing information about animals available for adoption.
