MONTGOMERY– Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has set a September execution window for death row inmate Jeffery Lee.
In a July 30 letter, Ivey established a 30-hour period for the execution. She sent the letter to Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Greg Lovelace.
Specifically, the window begins at 12:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. It expires at 6:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18.
According to the governor’s letter, Lee received a death sentence for the capital murders of Jimmy Ellis and Elaine Thompson. The case also involved the attempted murder of Helen King.
Alabama Supreme Court Issues Execution Warrant
The Alabama Supreme Court authorized the Alabama Department of Corrections commissioner to carry out Lee’s death sentence. The commissioner must act within the period selected by the governor.
The court issued its order July 22. That order now serves as Lee’s execution warrant.
Earlier, Alabama filed a motion June 12 renewing its request to authorize the execution. After reviewing the motion, the court granted the state’s request.
Additionally, the court directed Ivey to begin the execution period at least 30 days after its July 22 order. The warrant concerns Lee’s case from Dallas County Circuit Court.
Although Ivey currently has no plans to grant clemency, she retains her constitutional authority. She may issue a reprieve or commutation before officials carry out the execution.
