JACKSONVILLE– Jacksonville State University plans to launch Jax Transit during the fall 2026 semester. The new campus transportation system will provide three scheduled bus routes for students, faculty, and staff.

The Chanticleer, Jax State’s student newspaper, reported that the university announced the new service Thursday. The system will connect locations both on and off campus.

According to Jax State Transportation Services, Jax Transit will become the university’s primary daytime transportation service. The routes will connect residence halls, academic buildings, student services, commuter parking, and selected off-campus locations.

Three Color-Coded Routes Planned

Jax Transit will operate three color-coded routes covering different portions of the university community.

The Red Route will serve the west side of campus. The Blue Route will cover the east side.

The Gold Route will serve off-campus locations. That route will allow students who live away from campus to use the new system.

The university has not released a complete list of stops. Operating schedules and additional route information are expected before the system launches.

Service Limited to Jax State Community

Jax Transit will be available exclusively to currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. The service will not be open to the general public.

That distinction means Jax Transit will operate as a university transportation system. It will not serve as a public bus system for Jacksonville residents.

Jax State has not announced whether passengers must show university identification when boarding. The university also has not released separate fare information for the new service.

How Jax Transit Differs From jsuRIDE

Jax Transit will differ from the university’s existing jsuRIDE program.

The jsuRIDE service allows eligible passengers to request transportation through the JSU Ride mobile application. Riders select their destinations and pickup locations before requesting immediate or scheduled service.

Jax Transit will instead use fixed stops and scheduled routes. University information describes the system as a shared, continuous service with more predictable arrival times.

Jax State currently operates an internal campus bus on weekdays. The bus travels a loop serving Trustee Circle, Mountain Avenue, and Forney Avenue approximately every 30 minutes.

The addition of three Jax Transit routes will create a broader transportation network. It will also provide another option for reaching academic buildings, residential areas, university services, and certain off-campus locations.

The university has not announced how jsuRIDE will operate after Jax Transit begins service. An exact launch date for the new system also has not been released.
