GADSDEN– Four people were taken to local hospitals Wednesday after a reported ammonia leak prompted the evacuation of 134 employees from the Tyson Foods plant on Steele Station Road.

The Gadsden Fire Department responded to the facility, formerly known as Keystone Foods, after receiving the hazardous materials report. Emergency crews began evaluating conditions at the plant while employees were moved away from the affected area.

Fire officials later confirmed that crews contained the ammonia leak and managed the incident safely.

Employees Evacuated as a Precaution

Emergency officials evacuated 134 employees to Church of the Highlands while firefighters assessed the situation. City of Gadsden transportation vehicles helped move employees from the plant to the church.

The evacuation was conducted as a precaution while emergency crews worked at the facility.

Four people were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Officials did not release additional information about their conditions.

AMED Ambulance Service and Advantage Ambulance Service provided emergency medical support and patient transportation during the response.

Local Hospitals Prepared for Possible Patients

Gadsden Regional Medical Center and Riverview Regional Medical Center prepared to receive an unknown number of potential patients following the initial report.

The hospitals’ preparations allowed medical personnel to respond quickly if additional employees or emergency responders required treatment. Ultimately, officials reported that four people were transported.

The Gadsden Police Department directed traffic near the plant during the response. Meanwhile, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with traffic control and logistics.

The Etowah County Emergency Management Agency provided water and additional support to emergency personnel and those affected by the incident.

Multiple Agencies Coordinate Response

The Gadsden Fire Department credited the safe handling of the emergency to cooperation among public safety agencies, ambulance services and local healthcare providers.

The department thanked AMED Ambulance Service, Advantage Ambulance Service, Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Riverview Regional Medical Center, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and the Etowah County Emergency Management Agency for their assistance.

Fire officials said the response demonstrated the importance of cooperation among emergency agencies, healthcare providers and the community.

The ammonia leak has been contained, according to the Gadsden Fire Department.
