In the Piedmont City Council’s work session, Brandy Faulkner of Kemp and Associates presented the results of the city’s audit report. The CPA stated that the firm found “no reportable problems.” Faulkner noted that in the last two fiscal years, Piedmont took in less money than it spent. She attributed some of that discrepancy to increased prices.
The council awarded Speegle Contracting the Cast Iron Replacement Project contract. Approved by Utility Engineering Consultants, the $1,580,188.00 bid will repair seven miles of gas line. Mayor Farmer noted that most of the money will come from grant funds and that the city would only pay a fraction of the cost.
Police Chief Nathan Johnson then addressed the speed limit on Foothills Drive. Residents have complained about speeders, and the narrow, windy road has no limit posted. Johnson recommended that a 15 mph limit be posted and enforced. The council approved.
The members voted to front a $9,065.13 payment to Cheerleading.com for uniforms. The mayor explained that the money would be reimbursed.
Three citizens then stated concerns to the council.
Hampton Epp, who lives on Crestview Drive, relayed that unmanaged trees and leaves near and on his property may create a fire hazard.
Kim Nadir of Barlow Street expressed concern about a drainage ditch whose runoff floods her yard and causes damage to her property. She maintained that the city has a responsibility to maintain the easement, adding that workers had begun a project to solve the problem but had stopped. Mayor Farmer said that the council will consult with the city attorney and decide how to proceed.
Brenda Spears reported to the council that the Eubanks Welcome Center is rarely open. Mayor Farmer stated that the center is staffed four hours a day, but the employees report very few visitors. Staffing expenses may not justify added hours.
The next scheduled Piedmont City Council meeting is August 4th.
