CEDARTOWN– A Cedartown man faces several felony charges after police say he strangled his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.
Coosa Valley News reports that Cedartown Police responded to an assault at a home on Jackson Street. Officers used a translation app to speak with the victim because of a language barrier.
The woman told officers that Gilberto Tomas Perez, 31, grabbed her neck. She said he choked her until she could not breathe. The woman fought back by scratching Perez, which prevented her from losing consciousness.
According to police, Perez then grabbed the woman’s arm and began throwing punches. The victim said he also threatened to kill her.
The woman called 911 on speakerphone. Police say Perez fled through the back door after hearing the dispatcher. The couple’s young daughter was inside the home during the incident.
The victim told officers that Perez had been drinking beer throughout the morning. She said he had also accused her of being involved with another man.
Investigators documented bruising on the woman’s neck, arm and thigh. They also reported broken blood vessels in her eyes and a torn shirt.
Cedartown Police Sergeant Zuker and his K-9 searched the wooded area behind the home. Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
The K-9 tracked Perez to his location. Deputies then took him into custody after police say he failed to follow commands.
Authorities began transporting Perez to the Polk County Jail. However, officers first took him to a local hospital after he complained of shoulder pain. A Polk County Sheriff’s Office officer remained with him at the hospital.
Perez faces charges of aggravated assault by strangulation under the Family Violence Act, battery under the Family Violence Act and third-degree cruelty to children.
