Leesburg Woman Dies Following Head-On Crash in Etowah County

ETOWAH COUNTY — A Leesburg woman has died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Monday afternoon in Etowah County.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 73-year-old Ruth D. Cagle of Leesburg was critically injured when the 2015 Nissan Juke in which she was a passenger collided head-on with a 2020 Toyota Highlander at approximately 2:55 p.m. on June 8.

Cagle was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Nissan, Denver J. Cagle, 76, of Leesburg, was also injured in the crash and transported to Riverview Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Highlander, Gaines C. Smith, 46, of Vestavia Hills, was likewise injured and taken to Riverview Medical Center.

The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 411 near Anderson Road, approximately one mile north of Gadsden in Etowah County.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division are continuing to investigate the crash. No additional information has been released.
