During the work session of the Leesburg Town Council Monday afternoon, the Council discussed the issue of Hemp Products to be sold at the local liquor store. The Council held a Public Meeting on the subject on May 26th with only 3 people speaking in favor of the measure and no one voicing opposition. However, Councilman Joe Sonaty told the Council he has had many local residents voice opposition to him about the issue. He said many also engaged him on Social Media opposing the matter. He said he was not in favor of approving the sale of Hemp Products in Leesburg. Other Council Members spoke against it also. During the regular meeting when the subject was on the agenda, Sonaty made a motion to not allow the sale of hemp products in the Town which met with a second and a unanimous decision to not allow the measure to go forward.
In other business the Council voted to hold a Public Hearing on July 13th concerning vacation of a portion of Bristow Gap Road. The Council approved a new agreement with AXIOS about the tasers and body cams for the police department. They are currently under an agreement with the company but the warranty has expired with their current equipment. The Company has proposed a buy back of the current equipment and outfit the department with new units with a full 5 year warranty with the option to replace equipment periodically so they will always have functional units. The Cost of the new contract is $47,000. It was approved for 4 police officers to go to a Pit Training Class later in the year with the training to be held locally.
