MONTGOMERY – As millions of Americans prepare to kick off summer travel during the
upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is
launching its annual “101 Days of Summer Safety” campaign, a statewide initiative focused on
protecting lives on Alabama’s highways, waterways and beaches through Labor Day.
This year’s campaign carries a patriotic theme as the nation celebrates 250 years of America,
reminding citizens that freedom comes with responsibility, especially when it comes to keeping
families and communities safe.

From the Gulf Coast to Alabama’s highways and lakes, ALEA Troopers and personnel will
increase patrols and enforcement efforts throughout the summer travel season. In addition to
Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol Troopers, ALEA’s Rescue Swimmer Detail will once again
be activated along Alabama’s beaches to assist with emergency response and water rescues
during peak travel periods.

“Summer in Alabama is about making memories with family and friends, whether that’s on the
road, on the water or at the beach,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “As we celebrate
America’s 250th year, we are reminding everyone that safety is a shared responsibility. Last
year, we saw encouraging progress, including a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and zero
boating fatalities during the summer season. This year, our goal remains the same, zero lives lost,
but we need the public’s help to make that happen.”

During the 2025 Memorial Day holiday travel period, ALEA recorded a 50 percent decrease in
traffic fatalities compared to the previous year and zero boating fatalities statewide, a
milestone the Agency hopes to build upon in 2026.

The campaign launch also follows ALEA’s participation in the Second Annual Southern States
for Safe Boating Press Conference, where Alabama joined marine law enforcement agencies
from five fellow Gulf states to recognize National Safe Boating Week and reaffirm the region’s
commitment to water safety.

Throughout the summer, ALEA’s “101 Days of Summer Safety” campaign will feature
coordinated safety messaging, enforcement initiatives, educational outreach and public
awareness events designed to encourage responsible decisions behind the wheel and on the
water.

ALEA Reminds Citizens to Keep These Safety Tips in Mind This Summer:
On the Road:
• Buckle up — every seat, every trip.
• Never drive distracted.
• Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
• Never drive impaired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Move over for emergency and law enforcement vehicles.
• Avoid aggressive driving and remain patient during heavy holiday traffic.
• Ensure children are properly secured in age-appropriate car seats.

On the Water:
• Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
• Never boat under the influence.
• Check weather conditions before heading out.
• File a float plan and let someone know your destination.
• Keep proper safety equipment onboard.
• Stay alert for swimmers and other vessels.
• Operators should complete a boating safety course.

ALEA encourages all residents and visitors to make safety a priority throughout the holiday
weekend and the entire summer season.

“Whether you’re traveling Alabama’s highways, enjoying our lakes or spending time on the Gulf
Coast, one decision can save a life,” Secretary Taylor added. “This summer, let’s honor our
nation’s legacy by looking out for one another and making sure everyone makes it home safely.”
