
FORT PAYNE— An inmate at the DeKalb County Detention Center died Wednesday after being found unresponsive inside the facility, according to the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden.
Authorities said corrections officers were notified on Wednesday, May 20, of an unresponsive male inmate identified as 63-year-old Mark Loveless of Somerset, Kentucky.
Corrections officers immediately contacted DeKalb Ambulance Service and Fort Payne Fire & Rescue and began rendering aid to Loveless until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.
Loveless was transported to DeKalb Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
In accordance with DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office policy regarding in-custody deaths, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was notified. Officials said the case will be investigated by investigators with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation.
Authorities also confirmed that Loveless’ body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences’ facility in Huntsville for an autopsy. Family members have been notified of his death.
DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden expressed condolences to the family, stating that thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Loveless’s loved ones during this difficult time.
No additional information has been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
