Marshall County Authorities Investigating Death of Inmate at County Jail

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in the county jail early Monday morning.
Officials report that correctional officers discovered the inmate unresponsive in her cell during the early morning hours of April 7. Officers immediately began CPR while emergency medical personnel were called to the jail.
Medics transported the inmate to a local hospital, where she later passed away.
The inmate has been identified as 52-year-old Debra Upton of Arab. Authorities say she had been arrested the night before by the Arab Police Department on a charge of Domestic Violence in the Third Degree.
As is standard procedure for any in-custody death, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation.
Officials say more information will be released as it becomes available.
