ALEA Launches New Online Marine Event Permit Submission to Streamline Service
MONTGOMERY –The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is enhancing its service to the public with the launch of a new, streamlined online submission form for marine event permits. The updated system replaces the previous paper-based process, which required applicants to download, print and scan forms prior to submission. With the new digital platform, individuals
and organizations can now complete and submit applications entirely online, saving time, reducing paperwork and improving overall efficiency.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said, “This new online submission process reflects ALEA’s commitment to continuously improving how we serve the public in all aspects of the Agency. By simplifying the application process, we are better able to support those hosting events while continuing our mission of promoting safety on Alabama’s waterways.”
Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), stated that the new system provides a more comprehensive picture for ALEA Marine Patrol Troopers tasked with supporting local events. “This updated process allows event organizers to submit key details upfront, including event descriptions, estimated participation, and optional safety plans or maps,” Colonel Archer said.
“Having that information on the front end helps our Troopers better understand the scope of each
event, coordinate resources more effectively, and ensure we are prepared to support safe boating
operations.”
ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division continues to process applications for a wide range of events, including fishing tournaments, boat races, parades and fireworks displays. The requirement to obtain a marine event permit remains unchanged and is rooted in long-standing state law and regulation. The permit application remains free of charge and must still be submitted at least 15 days prior to the scheduled event to allow for proper review and coordination with law enforcement and emergency response partners. Event organizers should note that approval of a marine event permit does not constitute endorsement of the activity or guarantee that it will be free from incidents. The sponsoring organization remains responsible for the safe conduct of the event and for ensuring all applicable laws and safety measures are followed.
Permitting marine events plays a critical role in maintaining safety on Alabama’s waterways, particularly as large gatherings of boaters converge in shared areas. The process allows ALEA to coordinate with organizers, identify key points of contact and provide support when needed to help ensure a safe environment for participants and the public.
