Fatal Early Morning Fire Claims Life of Etowah County Man

Southside— An early morning house fire on March 17 claimed the life of an 82-year-old man and is believed to have also killed three dogs, according to local authorities.

Etowah County 911 received a report at approximately 3:38 a.m. from a passing motorist who observed a residential structure fire. Firefighters from the Southside, Rainbow City, and Whorton Bend Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the Southside Fire Department found a double-wide manufactured home fully engulfed in flames. After crews brought the fire under control, a search of the residence was conducted, and a male victim was located deceased inside.

Etowah County Coroner London Pearce identified the victim as Larry Pentecost, 82. Pearce said Pentecost died as a result of conditions caused by the smoke and fire. Authorities also reported that three dogs are believed to have perished in the blaze.

The Etowah County Arson Task Force, along with the Southside Police Department, responded to begin an investigation into the cause of the fire. While the investigation remains ongoing, officials say the fire currently appears to be accidental in nature.

The Etowah County Arson Task Force is made up of investigators from the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, and various local fire and law enforcement agencies across the county.
