Jacksonville State launches Bachelor of Science in Aviation

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.– Jacksonville State University has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Aviation program, with classes set to begin in Fall 2026.

According to the university, the program was approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education on March 13, 2026, and is designed to prepare students for careers in commercial aviation, aviation management, and public safety aviation.

JSU said the degree will offer three concentrations: Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, and Public Safety Aviation. University officials say the program will combine academic instruction with hands-on training to prepare students for a wide range of aviation careers.

The Commercial Aviation concentration will include structured flight training aligned with Federal Aviation Administration standards. JSU said students in that track will have the opportunity to earn credentials including Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot certifications, along with Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings. Graduates are expected to complete 300 flight hours as part of the program.

The Public Safety Aviation concentration will focus on training first responders to use aviation and unmanned aircraft systems in emergency response and public safety operations. The Aviation Management concentration is designed for students seeking leadership and operational roles in airports, airlines, and other aviation-related organizations.

“This program represents an exciting step forward for Jacksonville State University and workforce development in our region,” said Dr. Don C. Killingsworth Jr. “The aviation industry is growing rapidly across Alabama and the Southeast, creating new opportunities for students and workforce needs for our state. Our program will equip graduates with the skills needed to succeed in a wide range of aviation careers.”

JSU said students interested in the Commercial Aviation concentration must first be admitted to the university and submit a secondary application by May 15. Prospective students can request more information through the university’s Aviation inquiry form, while current students considering a major change are encouraged to speak with their academic advisors.

University officials also said JSU is working to secure FAA Part 141 authorization for ground school and is establishing partnerships with certified flight training providers. The university has also launched a national search for its first Aviation Department Head.

Located near major regional airport hubs in Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, and Chattanooga, JSU said the new program is intended to help meet the growing demand for aviation professionals while also supporting economic development in northeast Alabama.
