Alabama Landowners Advised on Prescribed Fire Season Procedures

ALABAMA – Prescribed fire season is underway across Alabama, offering critical benefits for the health and productivity of the state’s forests. State forestry officials are reminding landowners of key procedures to ensure safe and efficient burns.

Officials report that the Alabama Forestry Commission’s dispatch center is experiencing high call volumes, which may result in longer-than-usual wait times for landowners seeking burn permits.

Key reminders for landowners include:

  • Same-Day Permits Only: The commission is currently accepting only one-day permit requests obtained on the day of the burn.

  • No Penalty for Canceling: Landowners can apply for a permit and decide not to burn without any penalty.

  • Free Permits: Permits are available at no cost.

  • Online Access for Certified Managers: Certified Prescribed Burn Managers can request their permits online at burnpermits.forestry.alabama.gov.

  • Dispatch Center Contact: For questions or assistance, the dispatch center can be reached at (800) 392-5679.

Officials emphasized that while prescribed fires are encouraged for forest management, patience is requested as the commission works to assist all stakeholders during this peak season.
