The Mayors of Cherokee County met on Friday with State Representative Ginny Shaver, State Senator Andrew Jones, Vice President of State Board of Education, Marie Manning and Adam Kilpatrick of the Alabama League of Municipalities.
All Mayors were present, Probate Judge/Commission Chairman, Tim Burgess was away on County Business.
Adam Kilpatrick with the Alabama League of Municipalities gave the Mayors a Legislative Update on bills going through the Alabama Legislature that would have a great impact on their communities. After the update, Mayor Warren asked the association to adopt the League’s position of bills going through the legislative process.

State Senator Andrew Jones updated the Mayors on some bills moving through the Alabama Senate and also told them about grants available for the 250th Celebration of our Nation’s Independence. Each grant approved will be in the amount of $2500. He encouraged the Mayors to get their applications submitted quickly because the grants will be funded on a first come first served basis.

State Representative Ginny Shaver gave an update on the bills going through the Legislature with the most recent being passed by both the House and the Senate and has been sent to the Governor’s Desk. The bill would allow the Death Penalty for raping or sodomizing a child under the age of 12.

The Vice President of the Alabama State Board of Education, Marie Manning, update the group on improvements going on with the schools across the state. She also asked for their support as she is seeking re-election to her position in the upcoming primary election in May.

The Cherokee County Mayor’s Association meets quarterly to promote the improvement of Cherokee County by working together.
