City of Rome Honored for Community Park Improvements

ROME, Ga.– The City of Rome has been recognized statewide for turning an overlooked neighborhood park into a vibrant community space.

Rome has been named a 2026 Visionary City Award honoree by the Georgia Municipal Association, in partnership with Georgia Trend magazine. The award highlights cities that show strong planning, partnerships, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

Rome earned the honor in the Large Cities category for the revitalization of Banty Jones Park.

City leaders say the once-neglected park was redesigned with heavy input from the community, including feedback from more than 175 residents. The goal was to create a safe, accessible, and family-friendly gathering place.

GMA CEO and Executive Director Larry Hanson says the project shows how listening to residents and investing in public spaces can strengthen neighborhoods and build trust.

Rome City Manager Sammy Rich says the revitalization reflects what Rome is all about — working together to create spaces that bring people closer and improve everyday life.

Community Development Director Bekki Fox says collaboration with residents and partners helped transform the underused space into a park families will enjoy for years to come.

The upgraded park now features open green space, a splash pad with a small amphitheater, modern playgrounds, pavilions, a scenic boardwalk, and restrooms.

Banty Jones Park is located at 212 East 13th Street and is open daily to the public.
