Plummeting temperatures across North Alabama will pose a significant and widespread threat of icy roads this afternoon and throughout the night. The threat may extend into Tuesday for many northern counties, where temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing Monday.
Between the rain stopping and the freeze, this afternoon ALDOT crews will use granular salt and de-icing chemicals to pretreat roads and bridges to whatever extent possible. However, it appears this window of time will be narrow. ALDOT will focus on preparing critical routes.

Response to icy roads
Following the freeze, ALDOT districts will remain staffed for the duration of the event. Crews will respond to treat icy patches as they develop.
Extreme cold temperatures can reduce the effectiveness of roadway treatments and create conditions that limit the ability of ALDOT crews to access and treat problem areas.
