Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Scam Calls Targeting Local Residents

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a wave of scam phone calls targeting healthcare workers and other residents across the county. Officials say the callers are spoofing legitimate phone numbers and using the names of real Sheriff’s Office and courthouse employees in an effort to appear credible.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammers claim the person they’re calling has missed a court date, failed to appear for jury duty, been subpoenaed as a witness, or is involved in an unfamiliar law-enforcement matter. Victims are then pressured to stay on the line, meet the caller in person, or “resolve” the issue by paying money or providing personal information.
Authorities emphasize that these calls are fraudulent.
Law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone, insist that you remain on the line, or ask you to meet in a parking lot or other location to avoid arrest.
Residents are urged to be cautious of callers who:
-
Refuse to let you hang up
-
Won’t allow you to call back on an official number
-
Demand payment through gift cards, cash-transfer apps, or prepaid cards
-
Create a sense of fear or urgency
Anyone who receives such a call is advised to hang up immediately.
For verification or to report suspicious activity, contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office directly at 256-236-6600.
Officials encourage the community to share this information to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
