Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Suspect in Multi-County Theft Case
Marshall County, Ala. – A man well known to law enforcement across north Alabama is facing multiple charges after a string of vehicle thefts and break-ins that spanned several counties and even crossed state lines.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies first responded to Breedwell Road in the early morning hours of September 29, after a resident reported their truck stolen around 3 a.m. Security cameras captured the vehicle leaving the driveway.
Just a few hours later, deputies were called to Pea Ridge Road, where another homeowner discovered their car doors open and signs the vehicle had been rummaged through. Surveillance footage showed a masked man walking around the property. Later that morning, the same suspect was spotted on another nearby property.
Investigators identified the suspect as Jonathan “John Boy” Rodman, already wanted in theft cases by both the Scottsboro and Guntersville police departments. When deputies attempted to approach his residence, Rodman fled on foot into nearby woods. Despite an extensive search with multiple agencies, he was not immediately located.
The investigation later linked Rodman to the theft of a dump truck in Marion County, Tennessee. That vehicle was found abandoned on High Falls Road in the Poplar Springs community on September 30. On October 1, investigators also recovered the stolen Ford truck on Pea Ridge Road following a community tip.
That same afternoon, Rodman was found passed out in a vehicle in DeKalb County, where he was taken into custody on local charges. Marshall County investigators have placed holds on Rodman for first-degree theft of property and unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle. He also faces pending felony charges in multiple other jurisdictions.
Authorities noted that home surveillance cameras were critical in quickly identifying the suspect. Sheriff Phil Sims credited the successful arrest to cooperation between law enforcement and the community.
“We appreciate the help of all the agencies involved,” Sims said. “Only by working together and sharing information can a case like this be solved so we can make an arrest and recover stolen property.”
Theft of property in the first degree is a Class B felony, punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison. Unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle is a Class C felony, carrying a penalty of 1 to 10 years.
Rodman remains in custody in DeKalb County. Once released, he will be returned to Marshall County to face his charges.
