McCord’s Crossroads Responds to Alexis Fire

From McCord’s Crossroads Fire Dept:

Alexis-Units from McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a wildfire with structures endangered in the Alexis community Wednesday afternoon after a local farmer saw smoke coming from his neighbor’s farm on County Road 86. While en route units learned that a farm tractor was also involved and that the fire was within feet of a shed filled with hay.

Engine 55, responded from station #2 and arrived in about 11 minutes, discovering about an acre of woods and field burning aggressively with a tractor and several implements already fully engulfed in flames.

A defensive fire attack was immediately deployed, with the primary focus being on preventing additional fire spread to surrounding exposures. Units from neighboring Spring Creek Fire Department were requested to bring a tanker for additional water. A knock down of the fire was quickly established; however, due to dry and windy conditions, units remained on the scene for nearly two hours and put approximately 5,000 gallons of water on the fire to ensure that it could not rekindle and spread to the nearby hay shed or other farm equipment.

The fire is believed to have started in the parked tractor.
