JSU Selected for Statewide Pathways to Progress Initiative

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State University has been chosen as one of only two universities in Alabama to participate in the Alabama Commission on Higher Education’s (ACHE) new Pathways to Progress Initiative. The state-funded program is designed to help adults return to college, complete their degrees, and strengthen Alabama’s workforce.
The initiative seeks to drive economic growth and stability by aligning educational opportunities with regional industry needs. For Jax State’s service area, the program will focus on producing more graduates in high-demand fields such as nursing, respiratory therapy, and education.
“We’re grateful to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for choosing Jax State as one of only two universities in the state to be part of this important initiative,” said President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “Being selected for the Pathways to Progress Initiative affirms our commitment to helping Northeast Alabama grow by building a stronger workforce and creating more opportunities for adult learners.”
Eligible students may receive up to $3,000 per semester toward a bachelor’s degree at Jax State. Combined with existing scholarships, the grant can make completing a degree more affordable than ever. The funding, awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, is available to both full- and part-time students who meet residency, academic progress, and degree program requirements.
To qualify, students must:
-
Live in Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Talladega, or Randolph counties,
-
Hold an associate’s degree with at least 60 credit hours toward a bachelor’s,
-
Have a 2025–2026 FAFSA on file, and
-
Be in good financial aid standing.
“This grant provides a life-changing opportunity for adults who want to finish their degrees without leaving their communities,” said Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Christie Shelton. “By combining this funding with Jax State’s existing scholarships, we’re removing financial barriers so more students can achieve their goals and strengthen the workforce in our region.”
Applications for Fall 2025 are due September 15, with deadlines for Spring and Summer 2026 following in February and June.
