JSU Mourns Loss of Ralph Burke, Longtime Gadsden Leader and Advocate for Education
GADSDEN, Ala. — Jacksonville State University and the greater Gadsden community are mourning the passing of Ralph Burke, a devoted public servant and proud Gamecock who spent decades working to improve lives through education and civic engagement in Northeast Alabama.
Burke, a Rainsville native and 1983 graduate of JSU, leaves behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and public service that spanned both DeKalb and Etowah counties. The university extended heartfelt condolences to his wife, Joy, and to his many family members, friends, and former colleagues.
After completing his undergraduate degree in physical education, Burke went on to earn both a master’s degree and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree from JSU. His deep ties to the university shaped much of his professional journey, including nearly two decades of leadership at the JSU Gadsden campus.
Burke served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1983 to 1998, representing DeKalb County and earning a reputation as a passionate advocate for education and regional development. But it was his work in Gadsden that many in Etowah County will remember most.
From 1998 to 2016, Burke led JSU Gadsden as its director, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the university’s presence in the area. He later served as Director of Corporate, Foundation and Community Relations for JSU until his retirement in 2018. Even after retiring, Burke continued to serve in a community relations role in Etowah County through the university’s Office of the President.
“Ralph Burke dedicated his life to making Northeast Alabama a better place,” said JSU President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “He was a proud alumnus and passionate advocate for education, not just at Jax State but across our entire region. More than that, Ralph was a friend to everyone he met.”
In Gadsden, Burke’s civic involvement extended far beyond campus. He was a key figure in local leadership initiatives, serving on the Executive Board of Leadership Etowah and as chair of the Etowah County Mega Sports Complex Authority. He also served for over a decade on the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Board.
Burke’s contributions helped shape the relationship between Jacksonville State and the Gadsden area, fostering partnerships that continue to benefit students and residents alike.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Meadowbrook Church, 2525 Rainbow Drive in Gadsden. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
As the university community and residents across Northeast Alabama reflect on his life, Ralph Burke is remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the heart, dedication, and integrity that guided every step of his journey.
