Patriotic Day Celebrated at Centre Elementary’s “So Cool” Summer Camp 30 Years of Fun, Faith, and Service

CENTRE, Ala. — The spirit of patriotism was alive and well at Centre Elementary School during the special Patriotic Day celebration held as part of the 30th annual “So Cool” Summer Camp. With American flags waving and a packed schedule of festivities, over 130 children enjoyed a day full of fun, inspiration, and a deep sense of community pride.

Watch the students at the So Cool summer camp show their patriotism through a song they rehearsed.

The event began with an opening prayer led by Tim Burgess, who serves both as commissioner and judge. Burgess offered words of gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy and recognized those who serve to protect them. A warm thank you was extended to the Cherokee County School System, along with David Wright and Betty Anne, the custodians who help keep the campus ready each day for campers.

This year’s camp, which runs Monday through Friday from June 2nd to June 27th, is powered by an enthusiastic team of six college students, who dedicate their time and energy to making each day unforgettable for the 134 registered children. These college leaders serve as role models and activity leaders, helping organize everything from kickball, dodge-ball, and volleyball to swimming and the much-anticipated talent show.

Guest speaker Dwayne Amos, a military veteran and retired Georgia State Trooper, delivered a heartfelt message that resonated deeply with campers and staff alike. Having served across the globe in places like Saudi Arabia, Germany, and throughout the United States, Amos reminded attendees to “think of your family, your country, and your service.” His words were a powerful reminder of the values the camp seeks to instill in its participants.

Leading the camp once again is Johnny Robert, who has served as camp president since it began 30 years ago, working alongside Program Director Nancy Steed. Steed highlighted that breakfast and lunch are provided through the free summer feeding program, and daily snacks are also available to keep campers fueled throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the camp each year is the announcement of the Camper of the Year awards given to one outstanding boy, one girl, and one overall top camper who exemplify leadership, kindness, and enthusiasm.

Adding to the educational experience, students from the Gadsden State nursing program visited camp this week to teach important lessons on water safety, sunscreen use, and general health and hygiene. These presentations are a vital part of the camp’s goal to nurture well-rounded, safety-conscious children.

With its perfect blend of recreation, education, and inspiration, the “So Cool” Summer Camp continues to be a cherished tradition in Cherokee County one that’s not only cool in name, but truly meaningful in its mission.
