MONTGOMERY– Gov. Kay Ivey has announced $27 million in capital funding for Auburn University and the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.

Auburn will receive $22 million, while the healthcare school will receive $5 million through the Public School and College Authority.

According to the governor’s office, interest earned on the authority’s original 2020 issuance will provide the money. The October 21 announcement also said Ivey approved both awards during an authority meeting.

Her office reported more than $1.9 billion in PSCA awards during her tenure. Ivey described the funding as an investment in educational opportunities and preparing students for their futures.

Auburn Plans Civic Leadership Institute

In a separate October 21 announcement, Auburn identified a $22 million state investment to establish the Kay Ivey Institute for Civic Leadership.

The university said the institute will focus on character, informed citizenship, responsible leadership, and understanding U.S. history. However, Auburn said it will develop the institute’s academic direction, programming, and long-term priorities in the coming months.

Ivey, a 1967 Auburn graduate, previously served as Alabama’s state treasurer and lieutenant governor.

Healthcare School Offers Statewide Opportunity

Meanwhile, the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences provides an educational connection for families across Northeast Alabama. The residential public high school encourages applications from all 67 counties, including Cherokee County and surrounding communities.

Its curriculum focuses on healthcare careers, with particular attention to the needs of rural areas.

The school also reports partnerships with more than 30 rural hospitals and statewide health institutions. Those partnerships also support plans for senior-year internships and pathways into healthcare careers.

In addition, students can gain clinical experience, shadow medical professionals, and pursue certifications.

The school welcomed its first freshmen and sophomores in August 2026. For the 2026-27 academic year, it operates at the University of West Alabama in Livingston while construction continues on its permanent Demopolis campus.

Families can learn more about eligibility and the application process through the school’s admissions website.
