CEDAR BLUFF– A $682,000 Cedar Bluff wastewater grant will help replace failed equipment and restore reliability at the town’s treatment plant. The project is expected to improve sewer service for 1,304 households and 45 businesses while supporting future growth.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced the Appalachian Regional Commission award, which the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs detailed in an October 20 release.
Local sources will also contribute another $682,000. Together, the grant and local funding total $1.364 million for the improvements.
Repairs Target Equipment and Treatment Capacity
Plans call for replacing failed aeration equipment and improving the plant’s disinfection process. In addition, the project will reclaim capacity in treatment basins and install a second pump for the wastewater system.
The work focuses on restoring dependable treatment operations while preparing the town for additional demand.
According to the announcement, local leaders said the improvements will support recent annexations and other anticipated growth in Cedar Bluff.
“This project will help safeguard the environment, provide better service to residents and increase economic opportunities in Cedar Bluff,” Ivey said.
She also commended local leaders for securing funding for the infrastructure improvements.
Supporting an Expanding Town
ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said the project would help extend sewer service to underserved areas as Cedar Bluff expands. He also credited the partnership between the state and the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Ivey notified Mattie Williams, chairman of the Utilities Board of Cedar Bluff, that officials had approved the grant. Meanwhile, ADECA will administer the ARC funding through its Alabama program.
The Appalachian Regional Commission brings together the federal government and 13 state governments to support economic development. Cherokee County is also among the 37 Alabama counties eligible for ARC funding.
However, the announcement did not provide a construction start date or completion schedule.
