ATTALLA– A $500,000 Attalla sewer grant will help repair aging lines and expand service near Interstate 59 Exit 181. The project also aims to address sewer backups while supporting existing businesses and future development.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced the award Tuesday, October 20. Funding comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the city of Attalla will contribute another $500,000.
Together, those commitments provide $1 million for the improvements.
Repairs and Expansion Near Exit 181
Crews will rehabilitate about 1,500 feet of existing sewer lines. In addition, they will construct about 1,400 feet of new lines.
The work will improve service to 23 businesses and expand sewer access to approximately 70 acres of developable land. As a result, the project is intended to strengthen a commercial corridor while creating opportunities for additional investment.
According to ADECA, local leaders reported significant deterioration in the collection system during its roughly 70 years of operation. The improvements will address overflows and backups in the system serving the southwest corner of Exit 181.
Gov. Kay Ivey said the project would address aging infrastructure while helping facilitate economic growth. She also notified Mayor Larry Means of the grant approval.
State and Local Partnership
ADECA administers the commission’s grant program in Alabama. The agency also said aging infrastructure can present a barrier to economic progress.
Meanwhile, the Appalachian Regional Commission operates as a partnership between the federal government and 13 state governments. Its work focuses on strengthening communities and economic growth across Appalachia.
However, ADECA’s announcement did not provide a construction start date or completion schedule.
