Vehicle Fire Draws Emergency Response at Centre Walmart

CENTRE– Firefighters and police responded to a vehicle fire at the Centre Walmart Wednesday afternoon, October 14. The call came in at approximately 1:30 p.m., with flames involving the vehicle’s engine area and passenger cabin.

Firefighters arrived within a few minutes of the call, according to information provided to WEIS Radio. Meanwhile, photographs from the scene show responders using a hose as smoke surrounded the vehicle.

What to Do During a Vehicle Fire

The U.S. Fire Administration urges drivers to act quickly if a vehicle catches fire. If you are driving, pull over as soon as you can safely do so and turn off the engine.

Then, get everyone out of the vehicle and move at least 100 feet away. Also, stay well clear of traffic and call 911.

Never return to a burning vehicle for belongings or try to fight the fire yourself. In addition, do not open the hood or trunk if you suspect fire inside, because doing so can intensify the flames.

For people nearby, keeping a safe distance also gives emergency crews room to work. Avoid approaching the vehicle or blocking access for responding firefighters and police.

To help prevent vehicle fires, the U.S. Fire Administration also recommends regular maintenance by a trained mechanic. However, that general safety guidance does not establish what caused Wednesday’s fire.
