Stroup runs wild in Warriors’ region football rout at Sardis

SARDIS – Jayshawn Stroup collected 208 yards on just eight carries and scored a pair of touchdowns in leading the Cherokee County Warriors to a 49-14 Class 4A, Region 8 football victory at Sardis on Friday.

Tatum Perry completed 5-of-7 pass attempts for 62 yards and two more scores for the Warriors (4-3, 4-1). His first touchdown pass went to JV Henderson for 31 yards. Hugh Miller connected on the first of all seven of his extra point attempts to give Cherokee County a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Henderson made his mark on defense later in the opening quarter. He returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Stroup scored his first touchdown in the second quarter on a 19-yard run. Perry connected with Isaiah Young on a 10-yard touchdown pass before halftime to make the score 28-0.

Keshawn Thomas opened the third-quarter scoring with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, pushing the Warriors out to a 35-0 edge. Stroup added an 82-yard touchdown run later in the third, extending Cherokee County’s lead to 42-0.

Adam Griffith added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third for the Warriors’ final score of the night, giving Cherokee County a 49-0 advantage.

Sardis (1-6, 1-4) scored its touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Xavier Pippin had touchdown runs of 15 and 10 yards. He also ran for a 2-point conversion on his second touchdown for the final.

Pippin finished with 52 yards on eight carries.

Cherokee County hosts Good Hope in a rematch from last year’s first round of the state playoffs on Friday.
