MONTGOMERY– Gov. Kay Ivey has proclaimed Saturday, October 10, as Alabama Girls in Sports Day. The proclamation, issued Monday, recognizes female athletes across the state and their opportunities to participate in sports.
The proclamation also highlights Title IX and its role in expanding athletic opportunities for girls and women. It cites a record 195,769 high school student-athletes in Alabama during the 2025-26 school year. That figure, however, covers overall participation, not girls alone.
The governor’s office says it chose October 10 because the date can be written as “XX” in Roman numerals. The proclamation uses those letters to represent the two X chromosomes characteristic of the female sex.
Ivey’s office also pointed to Alabama laws adopted in 2021 and 2023 concerning participation in girls’ and women’s sports. The 2021 law applied to public K-12 schools. The 2023 law extended restrictions to public two-year and four-year colleges.
“Alabama sets the standard when it comes to protecting girls sports,” Ivey said in the release. She described the day as a chance to celebrate female athletes and encourage the next generation of competitors.
