Downtown Gadsden Street Closures Planned Friday for Homecoming Parade and First Friday

GADSDEN– Motorists should expect street closures and heavier traffic in downtown Gadsden Friday as the Gadsden City High School Homecoming Parade and October First Friday take place on the same day.

According to the City of Gadsden, Broad Street and several other downtown streets will close beginning at noon Friday, Oct. 2. The Gadsden City High School Homecoming Parade is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Most streets affected by the parade are expected to reopen after the procession. However, Broad Street will remain closed to vehicle traffic through the end of First Friday at 8 p.m.

Gadsden City Schools will also operate on an early-release schedule Friday ahead of the parade. Gadsden City High School will dismiss at 11 a.m., middle schools at 11:15 a.m., and elementary schools at 11:30 a.m.

Homecoming activities will continue Friday evening at Titan Stadium. The homecoming court presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., followed by Gadsden City’s football game against Grissom High School at 7 p.m.

Downtown activity will continue after the parade with October First Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. The event is the final scheduled First Friday of the April-through-October season.

First Friday will feature classic cars, food vendors, downtown shopping, and live entertainment. Stores and restaurants throughout downtown are also expected to remain open later for the event. Admission is free.

Scheduled entertainment includes Pickn’ n Grinnin’ at Third and Broad, Matt Harvey at Fourth and Broad, Love Rat at Fifth and Broad, and Paintings by Barry in the 600 block of Broad Street.

Motorists who normally travel through downtown Gadsden should plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time beginning at noon Friday. Broad Street will remain unavailable to through traffic throughout the afternoon and evening because of the parade and First Friday activities.
