At their September 28th meeting, the Cherokee County Commission adopted their annual budget for the fiscal year October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 with the exception of a $1 per hour pay increase for all eligible employees. Chairman Tim Burgess explained that the budget will be released to media outlets once the increase is added to the existing document.
In the planning session EMA Director Shawn Rogers explained the 911 dispatch contract. According to Rogers, the contract figure is based on annual call volume, and unincorporated areas of Cherokee County accounted for 54.14% of all calls. During the meeting the commission agreed to the 911 contract and authorized the chairman to sign it.
In old business Chairman Burgess announced the appointment of one position on the Cherokee County Industrial Development Authority will take place at the Tuesday, October 13, 2026 meeting. This is a six-year unexpired term for District III that will end in January 2029. Submittal of resumes, letters, and the like will be accepted through Wednesday, October 7th until the close of business in the Commission Office.
In new business the commission approved the Procurement Contract for Services to Aging Customers with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission for the period of October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 and authorized the chairman to sign.
Also in the meeting local attorney Dean Buttram presented a $10,000 donation to Katie Lybrand of the animal shelter on behalf of the attorney and his wife.
