RAINBOW CITY– Students returned to John S. Jones Elementary School on Friday after a morning evacuation prompted by a suspected gas leak. The school later said there was no leak and normal activities had resumed.
In its first message to parents, the school described the concern as a minor gas leak and said students had been taken to Rainbow Middle School. Rainbow City police and firefighters responded. The school said all students were safe.
Spire Energy subsequently determined there was no leak inside the building, according to a school update. After receiving clearance to return, students walked back to John S. Jones with assistance from police.
In a final message, the school said, “We do not have a gas leak at JSJ.” It praised students, faculty and staff for their swift, organized response and thanked Spire, Rainbow City police and fire personnel, Mrs. Lee, Rainbow Middle School and parents for their support.
The school said it was back to business as usual. Rainbow City police shared the school’s first two updates; the final message came from the school.
