ANNISTON– Eastman will hold a community meeting Sept. 29 about the Choccolocco Creek cleanup and how contaminants move through the environment.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bynum Community Center, 200 Victory Drive, in Eastaboga. According to Eastman’s event schedule, the session is scheduled to run until 7 p.m.
Geosyntec will present “Understanding Sediment and Surface Water: How Contaminants Move Through the Environment.” The presentation will explain how scientists study sediment and surface water to track contaminant movement over time. It will also address how that information helps guide monitoring and cleanup plans, according to Eastman.
In addition, Eastman project representatives will discuss upcoming work, project milestones, and what residents may notice as the cleanup progresses. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about the work in and around Choccolocco Creek.
The meeting is part of a community presentation series on environmental studies and remediation in the creek and Logan Martin Lake. Eastman’s event schedule also invites residents, anglers, property owners, businesses, and other interested community members to attend.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a cleanup decision in December 2024 for the Anniston PCB site’s Choccolocco Creek area. That area includes portions of Snow Creek and its floodplain, as well as Choccolocco Creek downstream toward Logan Martin Lake. Eastman’s project overview lists selected actions including sediment dredging, creek bank stabilization, and long-term monitoring.
