GADSDEN– Gadsden State Community College is accepting applications for its Echocardiography Certificate Program through Dec. 1. The program gives working sonographers a way to train in cardiac imaging while continuing their careers.

The 21-credit-hour program is offered at Gadsden State’s Valley Street Campus. It combines online coursework with an on-campus lab one night a week. Students also receive hands-on training with equipment used to produce ultrasound images of the heart.

“Many of the students interested in this program are already working professionals, so flexibility is important,” said Kimberly Moss, an echocardiography instructor at Gadsden State. “The hybrid format allows them to continue working while developing a new skill set.”

Echocardiographers use ultrasound equipment to capture images that help physicians evaluate and monitor heart conditions. They may work in hospitals or physician offices.

Gadsden State admits a new certificate class each spring. Applicants must be graduates of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, registered vascular sonographers, or sonographers with more than five years of clinical scanning experience.

Selection depends on applicants’ rankings, completion of admission requirements, and available space at clinical facilities. Applicants must also gain unconditional admission to Gadsden State and complete the program requirements by the Dec. 1 deadline.
