GUNTERSVILLE – The Guntersville Wildcats took an early touchdown lead against Cherokee County in Class 4A, Region 8 football action on Friday night, but that would be all the Warrior defense yielded in a 19-7 victory.

The Warriors (3-1, 3-0) limited Guntersville (2-3, 2-2) to just 172 total yards and forced a pair of turnovers, including an interception by Easton Morgan.

Jayshawn Stroup provided the offensive punch for Cherokee County. He ran for 153 yards on 30 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 49 and 8 yards in the first and second quarters respectively.

Tatum Perry completed 14-of-20 pass attempts for 139 yards and a 40-yard touchdown to tight end Nate Black before halftime to give the Warriors a 19-7 lead. Black caught a pair of passes for 52 yards and a score. Perry also ran for 39 yards on nine carries.

Will McCamy completed 9-of-22 passes for just 40 yards to lead the Wildcats. Garrett Christie accounted for Guntersville’s only touchdown on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mack Howard.

Cherokee County steps out of region play to play at Jacksonville on Friday. Guntersville has an open date.
