DEKALB COUNTY– The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about callers falsely claiming to represent Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative.
According to the agency, callers say a customer’s electric bill is two months overdue. They then ask the customer to make a payment.
However, residents who believe their accounts are current should end the call. Instead, the Sheriff’s Office recommends contacting the cooperative directly to verify any balance.
For billing questions, Sand Mountain Electric lists 256-638-2153 among its official contact numbers.
Earlier this summer, the Sheriff’s Office issued a separate warning about another DeKalb County phone scam. In both cases, authorities advised residents to verify payment demands before sending money.
